Sharing #1: Technology-Mediated Fieldwork

Ms Huang Peishi & Ms Amanina (Naval Base Secondary School)

Signed up for the SgLDC Virtual Meet and was pleasantly surprised that there was a Geography-related sharing - this sharing was on the use of Thinglink for Lower Sec Geography Water Geographical Investigation.

Some screen captures to give a broad overview of the GI structure:

(Also linking the Thinglink site here.)

What is Thinglink?

Thinglink is a tool that makes it easy to annotate digital items. We can use images, videos, 360° media, audio, video, embeds and web links for tagging. By adding tags, students can interact with the media, drawing more detail from it.

Using Naval Base Secondary School's Thinglink as an example, the bubbles are media that students can interact with.

What have I learnt from this sharing session?

The presenters mentioned that since the students were unable to go out on the field for their GI, Thinglink allowed them to still have some semblance of a GI experience - i.e. exploring the field site with the use of rich media such as 360° photos and videos, and even water quality data collected from past years.

I believe that Thinglink could be a valuable tool even when physical fieldwork resumes. We could use the platform as a means to set the context of our GI (so a virtual tour of the field site). This way, we can better preempt students about what to look out for when they are on the field, making it a richer and more fruitful experience.

(This could also be an opportunity for students to create their own 360 photos and CoSpaces! Linking Raine's post here for my own future reference 😬)

Hope to have the opportunity to create our own Thinglink for future GIs!

Sharing #2: Use of tech tools for effective T&L

Ms Tay Xiu Yu (St Joseph's Institution)

The second sharing I attended was the use of tech tools to aid students in self-directed learning. It touched on how to 快速制作帮助学生自主学习的各种词语游戏 (my best translation: creating online games for revision/self-directed learning quickly).

What have I learnt from this sharing session?

My greatest takeaway from the sharing is the introduction of apps/online platforms that allow us to create flashcards that students can use for revision quickly (though this may be more relevant for language teachers).

I am excited that you are excited about CoSpaces. I am also keen to use ThingLink in our school's e-openhouse this year!

Hopefully I'll have concrete experiences to share at the end of the year and we can work on refining our Lower Sec GI packages next year using some of these tech tools! 🤗
